An infinite scroll page is when new content appears when you reach the bottom of a web page; as long as you are scrolling down (and reaching the bottom of the page), new content will incrementally load. Many social media sites use it (such as Facebook and Twitter) as it is an easy way to manage vast amounts of data, in real-time.

• Why is Infinite Scroll Page a Problem for SEO

The problem is that search engine spiders are unable to scroll to the bottom of an infinite scroll page. What will happen is that with a standard implementation of an infinite scroll page, the search engine will only be able to retrieve the first page of results. This, in turn, means that content further on in the infinite scroll is not detected, and will not show up in any search engine results. This is not good news for your website because the content that can only be accessed via the infinite scroll page won’t be able to rank in search engines.

• How to Check if There are SEO Issues With Your Infinite Scroll Page

Firstly, it is important to clarify whether your website has a problem with infinite scroll and what the search engine spiders are detecting. Firstly, you need to see what your website looks to Google and you can do this by visiting: “cache:www.example.com” and check out the text-only version of your site. You will be able to see the crawl path to your content and if there is content missing. It is also a good idea to check out your website with JavaScript disabled (use a browser web developer tool for this such as Chrome Developer Tools).

• How to Deal With the Infinite Scroll SEO issue

Many people feel that infinite scroll pages should be avoided, due to the repercussions it can have on SEO, however, this isn’t necessarily the case. There’s a solution that can not only make sure that your infinite scrolling has no adverse affects on SEO, but that can actually, in some cases, improve your site’s SEO.

• Graceful Degradation

Also known as progressive enhancement involves using web techniques in a layered style to ensure that every visitor will receive a similar experience, regardless of their browser’s capabilities.

So for basic browsers or devices the website’s advanced functionalities will be gracefully degraded, without having a negative impact on accessibility. People using more advanced browsers will get served a more advanced version of the web page. Therefore, a web page that incorporates infinite scroll pages should gracefully degrade when being used by a basic device, and search engine spiders fall into this category. This means that when a spider views an infinite scroll page, the site should automatically replace the infinite scroll with something more suitable for the search engine spider.

There are a few different techniques to properly implement graceful degradation that go beyond the scope of this article, but if you want to use an infinite scroll page on your website, make sure to look into this topic and/or ask your web developer to develop the page in a way that all your content can be indexed by search engines.
